TIPS FOR PRE-WINTER INSPECTION FOR VEHICLES IN CALGARY

driving

Winters are harsh in Calgary, but with proper preparation, you can rest assured that your vehicle will make it through with ease. In cold weather, you need to realize the havoc that the low temperatures and frost can have on your vehicle, and start preparing in fall to avoid trouble later.

10 Ways to Prepare Your Car for Winter

These 10 simple steps will ensure your car is winter-ready long before the first snowfall:

  1. Oil Change - If you are close to your oil change mark, get one done. However, make sure you are getting the right viscosity and thickness of oil for this time of year. Oil will thicken in cooler temperatures, so if your vehicle’s oil is already too thick, it may not do the best job at lubricating your engine.

  2. Wiper Blades - Now is the time to also replace your windshield wiper blades. They typically need replacement once a year, but if they are frequently used, you may find they wear out every few months.

  3. Battery - Now is the perfect time to examine your battery and make sure all connections and posts are corrosion-free. If your battery is over three years old, take it to a repair shop for a new charge.

  4. Belts and Hoses - Have all belts and hoses also examined for wear and tear, even if your car is fairly new. Cold weather will wear out your belts and hoses quickly, so you need to check that they are still in good shape.

  5. Tires - Not only should you consider putting winter tires on your vehicle, but you need to also make sure they are properly inflated and that your winter tires have adequate traction for the adverse weather conditions ahead.

  6. Lights - All tail lights, marker bulbs, third-level brake lights and headlights should be in working condition. If they are not, now is the time to replace them.

  7. Antifreeze - Antifreeze levels should be adequate for the winter using a 50/50 ratio of distilled water and antifreeze.

  8. Emergency Kit - A roadside emergency kit is a must for anyone driving in the winter. Ensure you have food such as granola or protein bars, canned food, water bottles, a blanket, fresh batteries, flares and jumper cables in your kit.

  9. Paint - Winter can be harsh on paint. Get a tough, high-quality coating of car wax on to help create a protective barrier against the elements.

  10. Take Your Car In - A pre-winter inspection and service can catch issues before they become costly repairs, or worse, leave you stranded in winter. It is important to make sure your brakes are in working order as well.
